30 Usability Rules to Be Aware Of

Smashing Magazine has a nice round up of 30 Usability Rules to Be Aware of. This information is not specifically about making your websites accessible to the disabled (although the Target lawsuit in California was granted Class Action status), but more generally about making your website usable.

Not all of these rules apply. And there is no way to enforce all of them. But this article provides a good overview of usability issues and how they apply to websites.

I hope you are building some of these into the SPSD apps. Then you can explain to RK what the benefits are, and how those principles should also be built into GOLD (or at least PLAT). Things like the 3-click rule… a corrolary to that would be a 1-click return rule: once you begin descending into a menu tree, there should always be a tracker line at the top of the page (MSR, sub1,subsub1,subsubsub23)which will enable the user to click directly on MSR and be taken back there.
