The JPG file format compresses a photograph’s information to reduce the file size. Usually, it’s not noticeable to the average viewer, and it’s what makes jpegs good for photographs delivered over the web. But, there still is compression and loss of detail going on.

Zack Curl wrote an article called Why Not To Create Fluid Layouts that does a great job of summarizing the problems with fluid layouts for modern web design. The bottom line is that fluid layouts are a Utopian ideal, but are somewhat impractical and problematic to implement. We’ll be sticking to fixed width layouts here in our design pursuits for the sake of consistency.
Microsoft released a new version of their ubiquitous web browser this week. IE8 is now available for download. If you’re still using IE6 or IE7, your browser technology is 3-10 years old. Upgrade today to get current. An Arstechnica article runs down some of the features. There have been improvements in speed, security, and standards compliance to name a few. And of course, we’re adding IE8 to our list of browsers to test as part of our design process.
The Microsoft Developers Network Blog has an article highlighting the Differences between IE8 Compatibility View and IE7. The crux of the matter for web developers such as ourselves is that when IE8 launches, we aren’t getting one more test case to check, we are getting two due to IE8 Compatibility View (which tries to emulate IE7 rendering) falling short of the mark. Which means we’ll have to test sites in IE6, IE7, IE8 Compatibility View, and IE8 in addition to our favorite of the bunch, Firefox 3. We do have to give credit to the article for highlighting some of the differences rather than letting us discover them ourselves.
