We’ve been with HTML 4 since 1999 or so. There has been some new proposals for HTML 5 and XHTML 2, which are both competing for the next generation of web mark up. This IBM article highlights some of the new and interesting elements proposed in the HTML 5 specification. Of course, it will be years before browsers support these.
